About this recipe
I prepared these roasted turnips recently, and they turned out so good that I was surprised turnips could be this tasty and easy to cook with gadgets like the air fryer.
Typically, I always go with a curry or sambar recipe with Turnips.
This dish is a fresh alternative! Following my success, I wanted to share this recipe with you.
The natural sweetness of the turnips takes care of all the flavors you need. Use it as a snack or a side dish but try it once to believe it!
Ingredients note
- Turnip: I used fresh small turnips for this recipe. Medium turnip is also good but looks for the ones with greens, as it indicates freshness. Turnips tend to turn bitter as they mature.
- Spices: I used a very minimal amount of spices like red chili powder, salt, garlic powder, and pepper to roast the turnips. You can always adjust the spice level according to your preference or use your own favorite seasoning.
- Olive oil: I used olive oil to roast the turnips, but you can always use any other alternative, like canola or avocado oil.
Instructions with step-by-step pictures
Wash and peel the turnips.
Cut them into cubes and set them aside.
In a medium or small bowl, mix the cubed turnips with olive oil and the spices: chili powder, salt, garlic powder, and pepper.
Mix well to get an even coating.
Preheat the air fryer at 380F for about three minutes. Air fryer preheating times may vary, so please check your user manual for exact timings.
Place the turnips in a single layer in the air fryer basket.
Air fry them at 380F for about 12-15 minutes. Shake the basket halfway through to ensure even cooking.
After 12-15 minutes, the turnips will turn fork-tender and slightly golden brown in color.
Air Fryer turnip fries are ready!
Serve them hot with any of your favorite main dishes or a dipping sauce.
It's like fries with a healthy twist! Enjoy!
Serving suggestions
I suggest serving these roasted turnips as a side dish with any of your main dishes, like rice, quinoa, dal recipes, or even pasta.
You can also enjoy them as a healthy snack. The last time I prepared this, I served it as a side for Bengali Masoor dal and steamed rice.
Storage suggestions
These roasted turnips can be stored in an airtight container and refrigerated for up to four days. Reheat them in the air fryer or oven before serving.
Tips
- The flavor of a turnip is inversely proportional to its size; smaller turnips will have a sweeter, mild flavor, while the larger ones have stronger flavors.
- Change your seasoning to suit your taste preference. Sprinkling a little bit of onion powder is also a great seasoning idea.
- Be sure to cube the turnips for the same size to ensure they all cook evenly.
Conventional Oven method
If you don't have an air fryer or if you prefer to cook in the oven, the same procedure applies for the most part.
Place the coated turnips on a baking sheet and bake in a preheated oven at 400F for about 25-30 minutes or until they are fork-tender and slightly golden brown in color.
