Here is a simple lemongrass tea recipe that has a simple, down-to-earth lemony aroma and packs a ton of health benefits in a small cup.
There are so many health benefits from lemongrass that they are actually nicknamed 'fever grass' too. If you are looking for ways to keep you energized throughout the day, this is the tea you need!
Would you like to save this?
The secret behind this tea is that it's free of any refined sugar, caffeine, and dairy. I bet that's what gives us the boost that lasts all day.
It's just recently that I started growing my own lemongrass plant on my patio and also started a simple routine of making this tea to kickstart the day. I have felt so good with such a simple change that I was inspired to share this with my readers and spread the joy.
I would suggest that you try this too. Not just for you, but for your kids and family too. Now that kids are going back to school, a simple yet powerful lemongrass tea will help them stay healthy.
The anti-bacterial and anti-fungal benefits from lemongrass can also fight off infections.

Ingredients

- Lemongrass leaves : I used homegrown lemongrass leaves. Look for healthy and long leaves for wholesome flavors.
- Ginger: Use fresh ginger root to get enhanced flavor but this is an optional ingredient.
See the recipe card for quantities.
Instructions
Rinse your lemongrass to get rid of dirt and dust. Watch out for those sharp edges as you cut them, as they can deliver a sharp cut sometimes.

Keep a pot for boiling water over your stovetop and add in your lemongrass leaves. This is also a good time to add grated or crushed ginger root if you prefer to use ginger.

Simmer your tea in the pot covered for about 10 minutes. Switch off the heat.

Strain the lemongrass leaves and ginger roots, from the tea and serve hot with or without sugar.
Common questions
Whenever you feel like it! I think the best time to enjoy a freshly prepared cup of lemongrass tea is morning time before breakfast, especially on a rainy or chilly day.
I started with a cup every day and then made it twice a day. The way I see it, there are a ton of health benefits to it, and a second cup after 4-6 hours can have amazing results.
Substitutions
- Ginger - Instead of Ginger root you could also use ginger powder. Look for organic ginger powder to keep it pure and simple.
- Lemongrass leaves - If you dont have any or enough lemongrass leaves, you could also use lemomgrass stalk to make this tea recipe.
Variations
- Sweetener - I prefer my tea without any sugar. But if you prefer your tea sweet, you could add sweeteners such as agave, maple syrup, jaggery, sugar or honey (not vegan though...)
- Cold - Refrigerate for colder version of tea or just add ice cubes once the tea comes to room tempearture.
- Colorful - Add turmeric or cinnamon to the lemongrass tea to get a nice golden hue and a ton of added anti-oxidants.
Storage
Refrigerate the leftover lemongrass tea for up to 3 days. For best tasting and healthy tea, it is better to enjoy it fresh.
Top tip
- Slightly crush the lemongrass to get maximum flavor infusion.
- I've used homegrown lemongrass leaves. If you do not have a lemongrass plant, you could buy lemongrass stalks from any grocer.
- Best part of this recipe is that you don't need specific measurements of the ingredients. Just add more or less to suit your taste.

I tried growing lemongrass up here in Canada and it was a massive fail. However, I'm happy to buy it at the store and now I know what to do with the leftover lemongrass after making curry paste.
