Expert Tips
- My variation from the usual Khichdi is that I used cracked wheat instead of rice. Wheat takes a little more time than rice to cook, so there are some adjustments to the cooking time that you have to make if you are preparing this recipe with rice.
- You can also use sambar powder. This makes the dish lot easier to prepare without compromising on the taste.
- Cooking with a pressure cooker can be a little tricky at times. The number of whistles you should allow depends on how high the heat is. Not to mention you should be careful not to open the lid when the pressure is high. For this recipe, you will need to set the heat at medium and allow for three whistles, before taking it off the heat.
- Try it with any of your favorite vegetable(s)

I'm trying to make this - not great in the kitchen but it didn't look too hard. I've pulled the plug on the HotPot and I'm waiting for the dal and the dalia to soak so I'm going to let you know how I'm making out. The process calls for adding chopped onions but I don't see onions in the ingredients. I just used half an onion. It says to add frozen corn in the instructions but they aren't in the ingredients. I'm using half a cup. Then the instructions say "Later add the soaked (and drained) masoor dal and dalia" but there's in information about soaking and draining included. I looked up other people's recipes and they say half an hour so I'm going with that. The ingredients list ¼ tsp Asfoetida / Hing - optional but then there's absolutely nothing mentioned in the process part as to when/how to use it.
I did quickly read it over to make sure I had all of the ingredients but I didn't realize all the mismatches until I actually tried to make the recipe. I've never worked with Dal, Dalia, or Asfoetida before so I purchased them for the recipe so I don't know how to work with them except for the instructions you provided.
