Roasted Yellow Moong Dal

Roasted Yellow Moong Dal spiked with chili powder! This is a special TV time snack! Throughout this year, I have posted several snack recipes but I think this snack would be the easiest of them all and perhaps the most delicious too!

Roasted Yellow moong dal

A healthy snack by your side during your TV or reading time is a good way to keep you away from sugary alternates. Those who visit my blog know I have a serious obsession for healthy and easy Indian recipes. When I first tasted my roasted moong dal, I knew I had to share it with my readers. Moong dal is a common Indian dal that’s very rich in protein. It is known to be very diet friendly as it is very low in calories. Yellow moong dal is extremely light and easy to digest. It is used for making soups and curries too. Check out my older posts for Tovve Saaru , Kosambari and Spinach dal  where I have used this dal for everyday cooking.

To make it a delectable snack, I made a few key changes. I added Chili powder and also added turmeric powder to it. Roasting them in coconut oil add extra flavor that will leave you wanting more after every crunchy bite.

Here’s the recipe details…

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup Moong Dal/ Split Yellow lentils
  • Salt to taste
  • 1 tsp red chili powder
  • 1 tsp turmeric powder
  • 2 tsp coconut oil

Yellow Moong dalSoak the yellow moong dal for 2 hours.  Drain the water and place it on a dry towel and allow it to dry.   After about 10 -15 minutes, sauté the dal with coconut oil for 30 seconds.

Roasted Yellow moong dalAdd turmeric powder, chili powder and salt and continue to saute for another 2 minutes.  Now, spread them evenly on a big plate and microwave/oven cook for 10 minutes (medium size microwave).  Check the dal often as it may burn, depending on the size of microwave.  Turn the heat off when you see a golden texture develop.
