Kashaya powder

Hooked onto coffee or tea? That’s ok. You can still negate the bad effects of caffeine with  the Indian Kashaya. I understand if you are hooked onto coffee or tea because I am guilty of it too. The relief I get from a little caffeine early in the morning is irreplaceable, but it definitely comes with long term side effects. So I have always tried to make up for it with some healthy changes.

Kashaya powderKashaya Powder is a mixture of Indian spices and natural herbs. Stirred with hot milk, it is a healthy concoction, similar to green tea. I like to use it as a regular bedtime drink for healthy results. Apart from boosting the immune system, kashaya keeps you away from common cold, fever, headache and other ailments.

Kashaya powderMy mom usually make kashaya powder with some fresh spices. But I thought to add some additional spices like Jeyshta Madhu, ( Dried Liquorice Root) and Dry ginger along with the standard ingredients. But 8 simple ingredients can make a powerful and healthy drink that you can make at home.

lets get started:

  1. Fry all the ingredients separately, in pan with medium heat, until you get nice aroma.
  1. Blend them all together and store in airtight container.
  1. Use 1 to 2 tsp for 1 cup of kashaya.

Boil the kashaya powder in water and add milk and sugar to suit your taste. It is normal to filter out the powder after it steeps in hot water. I prefer to drink it without filtering.

  1. I always make my girls “yellow tea” when they have a cough. This sounds way better than what I usually make and I love the idea of having the spices all ready ahead of time!
